CM Film Openings: Horror

Saw III: Darren Bousman: 2006:

  • Having blackness surrounding the shot symbolises the unknown and towards humans that is recognised as fear.
  • The facial expression of pain shows both fear and terror, reinforcing the horror genre.
  • The use of a gun represents a cause of death, again supporting the horror theme.
  • Tiled floor represents a prison which is can suggests imprisonment and captivity.

  1. I agree, the darkness creates a sense of the unknown, maybe we could use this technique?

  2. I think the lighting would be key to a horror film as not only as you said does it create a sense of the unkown but also it helps to establish at what time of day it is, also the use of shadows to make someone appear more mysterious by having half their face covered by a shadow.
