Group: Genre Discussion?:

I think that we should choose to do the genre of Thriller. As is easier to accomplish some of the genre traits than doing a horror, for example, we can easily show a killing with a hooded figure appearing from in a dark room and then murdering a person working at their desk. This is easier to represent rather than having a teen drama were lots of characters are needed to represent the common stereotypes within a school situation. Yet I am open to the idea of a horror as is also able to be shot well, for example a man walking through a dark area such as woods, with an axe dripping with blood and a collapsed body behind him lying down by a tree, who we think he has just killed or something?

  1. I think a thriller would be a good idea, and maybe try to incorporate elements of horror into our production as well.

  2. I agree however if we did incorporate elements of horror aswell into our presentation I think that we might go off more towards horror by accident, due to the accesibility of being able to produce a scary or suspense opening. I think thriller is the genre we should do as there are so many different styles to an opening that we could do, it means we can be very creative with our opening, thus allowing us to incorporate maybe other sub-genres like horror however we must be carefull of sticking to having thriller as the backbone to the opening and just have horror elements about it.

  3. Thriller is very broad - you would need to identify a sub-genre of thriller and be clear about its conventions. What you can take from horror openings is the idea of establishing an antagonist, building tension; however horror tends towards gore, psychological or supernatural terror. Thrillers are usually about authority / establishment as antagonist; or a human hero playing outside a system for what is ultimately a morally right outcome. Think carefully about differences in narrative and ideology between the two.
